OG storyteller bannerShort summary

Shahoots is our furry blue storyteller. The name Shahoots comes from the  expression for “the Story you Tell” in the Berber language. Shahoots is also the key character of our project and IndieGoGo campaign and personifies the central role of storytelling and narrative in learning.

What’s your favorite childhood story? Do you have a story you would like to tell? Shahoots® is the multimedia “talemaker” for your inner child. It is our Storytelling App built as a game – conceived for but not limited to children. It enables you to imagine, tell, record, hear and animate a story and then play it back. Shahoots is a lot like making your first animated movie. The child (or the inner child) is the script writer, the designer, the director, the casting director, the producer and the actor of his or her story. You can tell your story with others, each with a role like a moviemaking team.

Kids around the world

Rather than put barriers on imagination, Shahoots allows children to create, tell and show their own stories, wherever they are and in whatever language.

How works

Shahoots works through the application of technology, and specifically storytelling, to enhance learning and creativity, as opposed to treating learning as a mechanical process. It’s a game architecture for touch screens based on User Centred Design, interactivity and Feedback. Shahoots uses “e-hand painted” original computer graphics that enable you to choose backgrounds, move characters, have them roll, jump, increase and decrease them in size allowing you to play with depth of field and sequencing.

• The child can choose to record a story first and then do the animations to the playback recording.
• Alternatively, the child can animate and move characters then record the story to the playback of the animation.
• And lastly, the child can record the story and animate the characters simultaneously and present their stories afterwards.

After almost two years of testing in classroom situations with 5-7 year olds and slightly older children in Algeria and India, we know kids love it!  We believe in the power of storytelling and curiosity driven games for learning. With a lot of hard work and energy, we now have a Beta version. Through this campaign we want to go further and have it available to all kids,  for free in the AppStore and across all touch devices.

We started iSikhna back in August 2011 after being the French software champions in the Microsoft Imagine Cup  – we wanted to keep working on the Millenium Goals of Learning and Primary Education for All. We have developed learning Apps Action Fraction and Flootsh that are free on the AppStore HERE and HERE and we are focused on the use of touch devices for interactive mathematics, problem solving, literacy and storytelling applications to give kids not only a more enlightened learning tools but also access to creative expression. We believe in the great possibilities of gamification for our mission of Learning for all.

Shahoots  the Storyteller started in early 2013 and has run on enthusiasm and sweat until now plus a combination of inspiration and curiosity driven inquiry. The feedback from our testing in schools with young children has been amazing and we see the potential of the App. We now want to go beyond the BETA version of Shahoots.

For the moment our intervention is needed for coding and the app is available only on iPAd. We want to take it across all touch devices and make it standalone for the user. Our overall Shahoots target is 44,000 and we are hoping to raise 27500 euro through IndieGoGo.

But there are deliverables all along the way

At 3150 euro, we can work on improved App features .

At 5750 euro we can do enhanced graphic design and some general development work.

If we achieve our target of 27,500 euro, we build new techs for IOS7-8.

If, as we hope , we exceed expectations (!)  then:

At 33,000 Euro Full Android Version

At 38,500 Euro Full Windows 8 Modern UI version

At 44,000 Euro Full OS X Version

Shahoots multiplatform

At 45,000 Euro+  We begin to develop:

Content Packages like Medieval, Mythology, Manga style

Full graphics elements and sound tracks and effects

We are a very diverse team, cross cultural, cross generational and cross disciplinary with tech, artistic, business and education backgrounds and united by a common objective of harnessing the power of technology to achieve social advancement and change through education and learning.

Casandra Prerost (SupaT) is originally an economist and has a background in business, international diplomacy, academia and filmmaking. Passionate about technology, she was first alerted to the potential of digital technology for education when she worked on the G8 Global Broadband Initiative of 1995-2000. She is a university teacher in the creative industries, digital business and international business by day and a storyteller/filmmaker the rest of the time.

Riley Ikni (Kyoshiro) is a UX programmer and designer with a Masters of IT. His dual passions are great user interface design and its application to problem solving, niten ichi ryu and bushido plus Berber culture and its language. He participated three times as a finalist in the Microsoft Imagine Cup and captained the 2011 French national team in Software Design.

Garfield Chan (Starcat) is our cat loving Super Graphic Designer of great originality and of the original conception of Shahoots.  She has an MBA in Creative Industries and is now back in Hong Kong as Project Manager for the Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations

Dana Povolachi (Social Network Kitty) has an MBA in Digital Marketing and Social Media and has been a project manager at OgilvyOne. She is the Queen of Social Networks, ace fashionista and adept of la dolce vita and leads our first crowd funding. She speaks an amazing number of languages and is also the Romanian voice of Pussycat n’ Boots.

Emilie Bages (DoReMi) is our dog loving Chief Graphic Artist, manga fan and geekette, working in the railway construction sector as a technical designer by day and who for iSikhna unleashes her quirky, distinctive and captivating creativity in the creation of our wonderful characters and personas.

Shahoots is our furry blue storyteller. The name Shahoots comes from the  word for  Storyteller in the Berber language. Shahoots is also the key character of our project and personifies the central role of storytelling and narrative in learning. To quote the great SF writer, Ursula Le Guin,

“The story–from Rumplestiltskin to War and Peace–is one of the basic tools invented by the human mind for the purpose of understanding. There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.”

As part of our research effort, we take a great interest in the findings coming out of the neurosciences. Simply put, we are “wired” for storytelling and being engrossed in compelling narrative quite literally engages and activates the parts of the brain that process what we see, hear, taste and movement.

The impacts will be many

We think that Shahoots will do for childrens’ imagination, expression, storytelling and articulateness what Harry Potter and Manga did for the reading of books 10 and 15 years ago. We need your support to make it happen.

Our approach is one of User Centred Design and therefore our focus is to test and test again in classroom situations, incorporate feedback and also to explore the ways teachers can integrate these new approaches into their teaching. We think Shahoots will be a great tool for teachers.

We are working with a social enterprise approach and are also very focused on a Value Model of product development. Value and meaning are central to what we want to achieve, not just coolness. We are seeking to harness technology to enhance learning, especially for young children. And making it free.

Our passion is education and our conviction is that both literacy (and numeracy) are the right of all children. We know that technology can help, can support and enable this goal. We are not just pushing technology to sell boxes and Apps and provide a “one size fits all” solution; we are responding to an international and pressing problem of literacy for children and its close relationship to poverty and social mobility. The relationship of poverty and illiteracy is startlingly clear.

We are aware that many people agree with our values and through this crowdfunding, we would like to give everybody a chance to contribute to this project. We essentially want support to do important graphic design and programming work so that Shahoots can be a standalone app and it’s users can download from the web, build in text and export the story as video as well as use it across all touch devices. Anywhere. We have a track record with free Apps for young kids and this is our most ambitious.

We have had significant challenges, most notably to run up the young childrens’ education learning curve very quickly – it helps to be observant, engaged, an active listener and  genuinely interested in the subject,  in children and respectful of teachers. Also that of balancing with our respective paying jobs!

The risks we feel are minimal because of the solid and long testing work in places as diverse as France, India and Algeria. Quite honestly, we think the risks lie in NOT harnessing technology for learning and deal with illiteracy are more important.

Is Shahoots a serious project? Yes it is. We have dedicated our motivation and time on a volunteer basis until now, and we believe the project has great potential. All it needs is some financial support to prove itself.

Is it a tested App?We are conscious that many apps are developed in a hothouse developer world and then pushed out. Or they are developed from the perspective of pure problem solving and finding a solution. Or it’s “just” a game. We test and test and test again in class room situations and we also have explicit results, currently being evaluated.

Is it an App for schools and classrooms? Yes, on the feedback so far, it seems to enhance class programs for learning vocabulary and sentence construction and a sense of time sensitive narrative. It is certainly useful during the “quiet time” structure for individual work, as an aid to storytelling by the teacher and incorporation into formal class plans. It also reinforces collaborative and cooperative class work.

Is it an App for individual usage? Yes it is, not only as a reinforcement of what has been learned and also just for sheer fun and creativity. It can also be used collaboratively.

What will it cost? It will be free to users.

What is different about User Centred Design? It is the integration of user experience with IT project design. Riley Ikni is our UX Design expert and he says that it is not enough to know latest web technologies or trends. It is about creating useful and useable applications and sites with great attention to design issues of interaction, economy of motion, response, appealing design, flow and game design and social proof. It means the design principles for Shahoots are closely based on research conducted with our users and usability and acceptance testing. And our young audience has sent us back to the drawing board a few times!

Is it “just a game”? It is certainly a game architecture with lots of feedback and interactivity. Being a game is not a negative. Learning is fun. Jesse Schell , author of the Art of Game Design defines a game as “Problem solving activity, approached with a playful attitude”

How will you roll out Shahoots if you don’t get all the money? We have adopted the flexible form of funding and will still have deliverables

At 3150 euro, we can work on improved App features .

At 5750 euro we can do enhanced graphic design and some general development work.

And beyond that we can start on building new techs for IOS7-8.
